It seeks to ensure that websites, mobile applications, PDF documents, videos, etc., can be used by all individuals, regardless of their physical, sensory, mental, or cognitive abilities.
From 28 June 2025, businesses offering digital products and services in the EU will have to comply with the requirements of the European Accessibility Act. The aim is to make them accessible and usable for people with disabilities.
The affected sectors are: technology and electronics, telecommunications, banking and financial services, e-commerce, transport and mobility, hospitality and travel, media and entertainment, and publishing and education.
Some examples of the affected products and services: the websites and applications of public and private services, online stores, online banking services, transport and travel services for ticket and travel reservations, e-books, streaming services, order terminals, etc.
Micro-enterprises with less than 10 employees and having an annual turnover or annual balance sheet of less than 2 million euros are exempt.
Respecting the norms of the European Accessibility Act can avoid sanctions of up to €100,000 for businesses. In addition, complying with the rules means: equal access for people with disabilities, a better user experience, reaching a wider audience and complying with web accessibility standards (WCAG).
